Law enforcement officers honoured

West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett and other officers who have died in the line of duty will be remembered at a memorial at the legislature on Sunday.

West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett and other officers who have died in the line of duty will be remembered at a memorial at the legislature on Sunday.

Hundreds of police officers, sheriffs, corrections officers and first responders from across the country are expected to attend the B.C. Law Enforcement Memorial, which is being held in Victoria for the first time since Beckett’s death in 2016.

A parade will take place before the memorial begins at 1 p.m. The procession leaves Wharf Street near Ship Point at 12:40 p.m., heading down Government Street to the legislature. The event takes place on Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

Beckett, a 32-year-old mother of two, died on April 5, 2016, when a pickup truck collided with her police vehicle at Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue in Langford. Her name was added to the monument last September, when the ceremony was held in Vancouver.
