A 52-year-old Ladysmith man is dead after his car struck a utility pole Tuesday evening. The man’s two children were in the car but were not injured.

The man was driving south on Yellow Point Road around 5:30 p.m. when the car hit a hydro pole and then a tree, said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.

Mounties from Nanaimo and Ladysmith rushed to the scene as well as B.C. Ambulance paramedics and the B.C. Coroner.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner. Two children, 6 and 8, were in the vehicle but did not suffer any significant injuries, O’Brien said.

They were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as a precaution and later picked up by a family member.

“They were pretty shaken up by the ordeal,” O’Brien said. “[The crash] is still under investigation but early reports indicate the male driver may have experienced a medical emergency just prior to the collision.”

An RCMP traffic analyst collected evidence at the scene and the car will undergo a mechanical inspection.

The man’s name was not released.
