Joe Fresh at Uptown is closing Feb. 28 — just three years after opening an upscale location in the Saanich shopping centre.

And it isn’t the only Joe Fresh store to close. Last July, parent company Loblaws Cos. announced it was shutting 52 Loblaw banner locations in Canada and the U.S.

The two-storey Joe Fresh at Uptown opened March 7, 2013 to much fanfare and proved a popular fashion destination in a cluster along Uptown Boulevard with other clothing retailers H&M and Forever 21.

Uptown marketing director Kristy Lowes said Tuesday the Joe Fresh closure “is a national retail strategy by Loblaw, their parent company.”

A Joe Fresh spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Negotiations are underway for a new tenant for that space, Lowes said.

Joe Fresh fashions are still available at the Real Canadian Superstore, another Loblaw company, in Langford.

Uptown continues its buildout with a Whole Foods grocery store scheduled to open this fall and plans are in the works for a large residential component.

Opening this spring are A Step Ahead shoe store, Parc Modern, PetSmart and Browns Social House restaurant.
