The historic 1911 Verdier house in Brentwood Bay takes a short trip Thursday courtesy of Nickel Brothers, which relocated it from 7247 West Saanich Rd. to face Stelly’s Cross Road on the same lot. The shift was required for a new project by developer Matt Peulen that will see the house become rental suites and brought back to heritage designation.

With the house moved, space has been cleared for a housing project that is expected to include 40 low-income units and six market-value townhouses.

Verdier house, a landmark in Central Saanich, was built for Frank Verdier, a planner for the Malahat highway.

The architect and builder of the Verdier house are unknown, but the interior was finished by prestigious Victoria firm Lemon, Gonnason & Company, also known for the interior finishings of the Empress Hotel, according to a report by Donald Luxton & Associates, prepared for the developer.
