Vancouver Island will heat up this weekend — and Environment Canada wants everyone to be prepared.

The agency issued a special weather statement for east and inland Vancouver Island on Friday about hot temperatures on the way. Temperatures are expected to spike in the mid-30s and taper off slightly by Monday.

In Greater Victoria, temperatures are forecast to reach a high of up to 28 C.

Environment Canada is warning people to be cautious about risks in heat waves and said these are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The statement advises:

• Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

• Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

• Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
