A strike by handyDART drivers and staff in Greater Victoria has been delayed after the employer made an application to the B.C. Labour Relations Board.

Ben Williams, president of Unifor Local 333, said First Canada, B.C. Transit's service contractor for handyDART services, has applied for an amendment to the essential services designation plan.

Workers were set to go on strike on Monday, but the union now must re-issue 72-hour strike notice. The earliest job action could take place is Thursday.

B.C. Transit said Saturday that negotiations are continuing and it is optimistic the parties will find resolution without job action.

HandyDART provides door-to-door transit services to people with disabilities.

Union members voted 97 per cent in favour of a strike.
