A house in the 1500 block of Kenmore Road sustained significant damage after a car crashed into it on Wednesday morning.

An unlicensed teenage girl who drove her parents’ car into a Gordon Head home has been issued two tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act.

The 16-year-old Victoria resident incurred fines totalling $644 for failing to remain at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 3 a.m. Wednesday, and driving without a licence.

The reason the 2013 Hyundai Accent left the road was likely a flat tire that did not deter the girl from essentially driving on a rim, leading to loss of control, said Saanich police Staff Sgt. Steve Eassie. There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.

The girl, who was accompanied by a 16-year-old friend, took the car without permission, but her parents did not not want to press charges.

The two-storey Kenmore Road house, occupied by a family of four and a female tenant, suffered major damage when the car embedded itself in the double garage after crashing through a fence.

The vehicle was there for hours until experts could figure out how to extricate it without causing part of the house to collapse.

After the crash, the girls fled on foot. A police tracking dog was sent to the scene but the teens had managed to hail a cab, which drove them to another location. Eassie said the girl then called her parents, who notified police while officers were still at the crash site.

The occupants of the house were not injured.

Power to nearby houses was knocked out and the sound of the impact was so loud that neighbour Tamzida Ahmed feared it was an earthquake. Her brother, Ashfaque Ahmed, said it’s the third accident this year and wondered if the road needs a speed bump.
