Langford firefighters are reminding people to make sure their smoke alarms are working after a fire early Friday morning in a basement suite at 238 Steller Court.
“We definitely recommend working smoke alarms in each house and on each level of every house,” said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Davidson.
The suite did not have a working smoke alarm. A man was awakened after fire broke out in his roommate’s bedroom and smoke filled the suite. His roommate was not home at the time, Davidson said.
The man was treated at the scene by B.C. Ambulance paramedics, but refused to go to hospital. He appeared to be fine, Davidson said.
The fire caused smoke damage in the suite and some damage upstairs, he said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Davidson recommends people test their smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries twice a year.
