View Royal firefighters rescued a construction worker who became trapped on a roof because of an injured back Wednesday morning.

A call came in at 8 a.m. about someone with traumatic injuries on the roof of a building at 29 Helmcken Rd., said View Royal fire Chief Paul Hurst.

Firefighters arrived and found that the man had injured his back and could not get off the roof, Hurst said. Access to the roof is via a narrow “ship’s ladder.”

“Given the complexity of the situation and the necessity to evacuate the injured worker off the roof, a mutual-aid call was requested to the City of Colwood for the tower ladder,” Hurst said.

The worker was treated, put on a stretcher and loaded onto the tower by 10 firefighters and four B.C. Ambulance paramedics.

It took about 45 minutes to move the worker, and traffic on Helmcken Road was diverted though the Eagle Creek shopping centre.
