A Colwood apartment building was evacuated early Saturday morning after a fire broke out in an empty suite.

Westshore RCMP, Colwood and View Royal fire departments were called to the two-level apartment building at 380 Belmont Rd. about 12:30 a.m. The fire was in a single lower-level unit.

“The suite itself was gutted by the fire and there was quite an extensive amount of smoke damage on the first floor,” said Colwood Fire Lt. Tim Hamblin.

All the tenants in the building were ushered out. Those living on the lower floor were forced to spend the night in a local hotel.

Soot caused considerable damage to the lower level. No one was injured.

RCMP said the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is not yet known. They ask anyone with information to contact them at 250-474-2264 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

“The investigation is ongoing right now,” Hamblin said.
