A fire that destroyed a 7,400-square-foot home under construction in Comox could be seen across the valley on Tuesday night.

Comox Fire was called to the house on Anderton Road about 7:30 p.m. after neighbours reported the blaze, said Fire Chief Gord Schreiner.

The department was conducting a training session that evening, so 30 firefighters were on scene within minutes.

Firefighters could see the flames from several blocks away. When they arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames, forcing crews to take a defensive stance.

Fire crews worked to stop the flames from spreading to another home on the property.

A fire truck from 19 Wing Comox was called in for backup.

The home had a roof and exterior doors but no interior doors or drywall, allowing the fire to tear through the structure, Schreiner said.

Workers had been painting and staining the house, which is listed for sale.

The property includes two homes on 5.3 acres of land and is listed for sale for $2.29 million by realtor Tina Vincent.

Comox Valley RCMP and fire inspectors are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze.

Schreiner said it’s too early to tell whether it was suspicious.
