A kiteboarder was rescued by fire crews off Clover Point on Friday afternoon.

A Victoria Fire Department crew plucked a stranded kiteboarder from the water about 500 metres off Clover Point late Friday afternoon after receiving a 911 call.

The 42-year-old man was uninjured, but it took rescuers from the department’s fire boat, Protector, close to 15 minutes to remove tangled lines from his ankle. Waves were up to three metres high at the time and winds were gusting at about 55 km/h.

Crews on shore pinpointed where the man was and directed Protector to the location. The man said he was an experienced kiteboarder and ran into problems when his gear malfunctioned.

A kiteboard is a surfboard that uses a kite to catch the wind.
