Two B.C. Ferries vessels responded to a rescue call about 11:45 a.m. Saturday after a canoe overturned in Baynes Sound, between Vancouver Island and Denman Island.

Both men were wearing life jackets and were brought aboard the rescue boat from MV Tachek, which was not in regular service at the time but was relocating to Texada Island. The Baynes Sound Connector was on a regular run when it also headed to the scene. The men were soon transferred to the coast guard vessel Maple Guard and taken to a waiting ambulance at Buckley Bay. There was no word on their condition.

B.C. Ferries also responded to an incident in the same area Nov. 19 when MV Kahloke came to the rescue of a man whose 12-foot aluminum boat had overturned south of Denman Island.

The ferry corporation staff perform an average of about 24 such rescues each year. Crews are trained to respond to a variety of emergency situations.
