Victoria’s arts community is concerned about the disappearance of 24-year-old Markus Spodzieja, an actor who was set to perform in this week’s Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival.

Spodzieja, who is a baker at the 2% Jazz coffee shop on Hillside Avenue, was last seen leaving the cafe about noon on Friday, according to his fiancée, Emma Hughes.

He didn’t return to the couple’s home downtown and he didn’t show up at the coffee shop for his night shift.

On Saturday morning, Hughes became concerned and tried to contact him. Her calls went straight to voicemail. She walked his route between work and home and didn’t find any clues as to his whereabouts.

Spodzieja doesn’t have a car, and his bike is at home, Hughes said.

Hughes reported him missing Saturday afternoon.

Spodzieja has never been out of contact for this long, Hughes said.

“It’s completely out of character,” she said.

His parents, who live in the Comox Valley, have come down to Victoria to help with the search.

Spodzieja was set to perform in Cafe Soap Operas at 2% Jazz on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Spodzieja is described as Caucasian with brown hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing jeans, a grey Abe Lincoln/T-rex T-shirt and brown running shoes.

“The support has been overwhelming and it shows how much people care about him and how many people he's touched with how kind he is,” Hughes said. “We're all really worried.”
