The yard and garden waste depot for Esquimalt and View Royal residents is moving back to Canteen Road.

As of Thursday, the community yard and garden drop-off site at Trio Landscape Supplies on Hallowell Road in View Royal will be closed and the drop-off will be relocated back to the former yard and garden drop-off at 605 Canteen Rd., next to the Esquimalt Public Works Yard.

“There’s been a change between Trio and the landowner, which is Esquimalt Nation,” Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins said. “Trio has our contract, so with the change between the landlord and Trio, we had to come up with a site. So we’ve gone back to Canteen Road.”

Trio will continue to operate the drop-off on behalf of Esquimalt, Desjardins said.

Meanwhile, Esquimalt will be issuing a request for proposals to solicit interest in providing yard and garden drop-off services.

Based on responses to the request, the drop-off location might remain at Canteen Road for the long term, or a different location may be chosen, the township says.

A second yard and garden drop-off location at Ellice Recycle at 524 David St. will continue to accept materials from Esquimalt and View Royal residents.

This service remains free to residents of the two communities with proof of residency. Residential decals for vehicle windshields are available at the facilities for those residents who plan to use the service regularly.

All material collected through the drop-off program is recycled into compost and reused within the region.
