An Esquimalt-based sailor convicted of using a controlled substance in Japan has been released from custody and returned to Canada, according to the navy.

The sailor had been in custody in Japan since early February. He was released with a suspended sentence and returned to Canada on Friday.

On Feb. 1, three members of HMCS Winnipeg were detained by Japanese authorities while the ship visiting a port in Tokyo.

Two military members and one civilian employee were detained for the alleged use of a controlled substance. One military member was released without charges. The other two remained in custody and were charged with the use of a controlled substance by Tokyo police.

The civilian employee remains in custody while awaiting a judicial hearing.

“The Royal Canadian Navy has been providing support to those detained since first learning of the incident this past February,” said Cmdr. Jeff Hutchison, HMCS Winnipeg’s commanding officer.

Hutchison said the navy is looking into the case to determine whether those involved will face further discipline.

“Drug use is not tolerated within our ranks, period,” he said.

“It is not only illegal, but it can also place lives at risk in our workplace. This message needs to be very clearly hoisted aboard, once and for all.”
