Victoria opened its emergency shelter beds last night as the temperature dipped below freezing.

Greater Victoria’s extreme weather protocol was activated Tuesday night as temperatures dipped below freezing.

The decision to open up emergency shelter beds for people who are homeless was based on Environment Canada forecasts, said Jen Bacon, regional co-ordinator of the program.

“It’s actually the third time this year the protocol has been activated,” Bacon said. The protocol was also put in place on Sept. 29 and Nov. 15.

The Greater Victoria Extreme Weather Protocol program was developed to address the shelter needs of homeless people during periods of harsh wind, rain, snow or subzero temperatures.

Under the program, shelter capacity expands from 260 up to 375 emergency beds and mats during extreme weather conditions.

Police departments were alerted that shelter is available. Under the Assistance to Shelter Act, police are expected to assist people at risk due to extreme weather conditions.
