An illegal encampment in downtown Duncan was dismantled Friday morning.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday said one person was arrested for disobeying a court order, and has since been released on a promise to appear in court. Homeless activist Chrissy Brett posted a video of her arrest on Facebook, during which she sang and voiced her displeasure with the camp being taken down.

“The City of Duncan, with us standing by to keep the peace, took away 10 tents,” she said.

The operation started about 9 a.m., Hobday said,

She said a B.C. Supreme Court order to remove the tents from Charles Hoey Park took effect at 3 p.m. Thursday, but enforcement didn’t happen right away so that a co-ordinated effort could be planned.

“They went and did what they needed to do to make sure, first and foremost, that everybody was safe,” Hobday said.

She said it was important to have a strong presence.

Campers had been in the park since March 31.
