A driver was slapped with a $575 ticket for tossing his cigarette out his car window in front of a police officer.

A West Shore RCMP officer was driving out of the Langford detachment onto Veterans Memorial Parkway on Thursday when he saw a driver toss a cigarette out the window, according to spokesman Const. Alex Bérubé.

When the officer told the driver why he had been stopped, the driver said he was sorry.

The officer then asked if he knew about the wildfires raging across the province, to which the driver replied he knew “there were a few fires going on.”

The Mountie gave the driver a lecture about the dangers of his actions, explained that the province is in a state of emergency and that a Metchosin home had been destroyed as a result of an out-of-control brush fire.

He then handed over the $575 ticket under the Wildfire Act.
