Driver fleeing Victoria police is tackled by a civilian

Government Street between Bay Street and Hillside Avenue in Victoria was closed for an hour after a driver fleeing from police crashed into a SUV on John Street near Three Point Motors.

A Victoria police officer tried to pull over the red Ford Probe around 3:30 p.m. as it was heading north on Blanshard Street near Bay Street. The officer checked the car’s licence plates and noticed something suspicious.

When she turned on her emergency lights, the car sped away, driving into the left lane on Douglas Street, then turning south onto Government Street and crashing into a Chevy Equinox stopped at John Street near Three Point Motors.

The driver ran off but was soon tackled to the ground by a civilian who witnessed the crash.

As the man was running away, he discarded a handgun, which police have seized as evidence.The man has been arrested and is facing several charges relating to the hit and run and possession of a prohibited weapon.
