Driver escapes injury when flying tire hits her car on Pat Bay Highway

A runaway tire on the Pat Bay Highway struck a passing car Wednesday but no one was hurt.

Saanich police said a 32-year-old Victoria woman was approaching the 50-kilometre zone next to Saanich Fire Department headquarters during the noon hour when a tire appeared “out of nowhere,” hitting the front end of her car and tearing off the licence plate.

She drove straight to the police station next to the fire complex to report what happened.

Police said the tire turned out to have come loose from the rear driver’s side of truck headed in the opposite direction. The 48-year-old driver had just had his vehicle serviced at a local shop and police said it appears the tire had not been secured properly.
