The 50-year-old driver who died Wednesday after veering off the road in Campbell River and striking a post and concrete is believed to have suffered a medical event before the crash.

Two passengers, a 53-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman, were hurt in the incident.

Campbell River RCMP were called to the 100-block of the South Island Highway about 3:30 p.m.

The pickup truck was badly damaged and a bus stop was destroyed. No other vehicles were involved.

Mechanical jaws had to be used to get the driver out of the vehicle. He died at Campbell River Hospital.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the driver and we are hoping for a full recovery for both passengers,” said Const. Maury Tyre.
