The B.C. Coroners Service will use DNA testing in an attempt to determine the identity of remains found near Lake Cowichan last Friday.

Service spokesman Andy Watson said a forensics specialist in Burnaby deals with such cases. The specialist first determines whether the remains are human. If so, further samples are taken to determine identity.

Watson would not speculate the length of time the remains had been there. But he said it’s hoped the DNA tests can be completed within weeks.

The remains were discovered in a remote area. Members of Cowichan Search and Rescue were called in to retrieve them.

RCMP have turned the case over to the B.C. Coroners Service. Foul play is not suspected.
