The shooting of a bull elk near Gold River on the west coast of Vancouver Island has led to charges against two men.

Nootka Sound RCMP and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service responded Monday to a report that a bull elk had been shot and left beside a logging road near Gold River, said RCMP Const. Ryan Walker.

The animal was intact, with no parts removed.

Police said they conducted a traffic stop after receiving a detailed description of a vehicle seen leaving the isolated area where the animal had been found.

Xiao Wu, 34, and Song Zhan, 51, face seven charges, including careless use of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm and unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm.

The men have been released from custody on strict conditions. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2016.

Walker said the investigation continues and additional charges under the Wildlife Act are anticipated.
