Cyclists and motorists took part in the annual round of friendly competition known as the Commuter Challenge this morning, a lead-in to Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week starting on Monday.

There were 16 teams in the friendly race, all of them made up of a cyclist and a driver. The duos started at the same location and see which mode of transportation proved to be the quickest way of getting to Fort at Blanshard streets.

Of the sixteen teams, 12 cyclists beat their motorist counterparts, while three motorists won. There was one tie.

Participants must follow the rules of the road.

Bike to Work Week in the region dates to 1995 and aims to encourage people to cycle to work. It has introduced more than 14,500 people to commuter cycling through the years. Last year, there were more than 600 teams and 7,000 participants.
