A 71-year-old man and his dog died as a result of a fire at his Courtenay condo unit late Saturday afternoon.

Twenty firefighters and five emergency vehicles responded to a 911 call to Puntledge Terrace, Courtenay Fire Chief Don Bardonnex said Monday. Heavy smoke was visible when they arrived. The man was given CPR at the scene, but did not survive, he said.

An investigation is in progress.

Strata council president Carrie Wells told CHEK News that the man, identified by relatives as Daniel Mitchell, had recently been released from hospital.

Wells said that after calling 911 during the fire, she rushed to Mitchell’s door as neighbours tried to kick in it.
