Coroner names man fatally shot in Port Hardy

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed that the man killed Wednesday in a Port Hardy police shooting is 24-year-old James Reginald Butters, also known as James Hayward. Butters was shot about 11 a.m.

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed that the man killed Wednesday in a Port Hardy police shooting is 24-year-old James Reginald Butters, also known as James Hayward.

Butters was shot about 11 a.m. after Port Hardy RCMP were called to the grounds of Port Hardy Secondary School, where he was allegedly making threats at a staging area for forest-fire crews. Witnesses said he had a knife.

The incident is being probed by both the B.C. Coroners Service and the Independent Investigations Office, which looks at police-involved deaths or serious injuries.
