An oil spill on the Pat Bay Highway at Elk Lake expected to tie up traffic for hours this morning has turned out to be 60 litres of cooking oil.
Crews are cleaning up the spill, said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie.
“Traffic is not blocked, however, motorists can expect some delays in the area,” Eassie said in an update on the spill.
“The spill occurred as a truck transporting the oil turned from Sayward road to proceed northbound on the highway.”
Police report that the driver drove for a while before noticing the overturned container and leaking vegetable oil.
“The driver of the truck stopped and attempted to alert other road users of the hazard,” Eassie said.
The spill is under investigation. It is not known whether charges under the Motor Vehicle Act for an insecure/unsafe load will be laid against the driver, police said, in a news release.
“Traffic will likely be delayed for at least an hour to two hours while crews clean up the spill,” Eassie said.
