Concerns about gun at Salvation Army lead to shutdown of nearby streets, bridge

Victoria police officers went to the Salvation Army building in the 500 block of Johnson Street after several calls came in about a man with a gun. As it turned out, he had a replica firearm.

Victoria police shut down the Johnson Street bridge and streets around the Salvation Army shelter on Johnson Street after a man was seen waving what looked like a handgun out a window.

Officers went to the building in the 500-block of Johnson Street around 9 p.m. when several calls came in about a man with a gun, said Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko.

As a precaution, police closed several streets in the area and the Johnson Street bridge.

Police entered the building, arrested the man and determined that he was carrying a replica firearm.

Victoria police is recommending charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. The man was released on a promise to appear in court.
