Comox Valley RCMP are investigating after shots were fired in Courtenay late Friday.

Police were called to the 400 block of Panorama Crescent about 11:20 p.m.

They confirmed that shots had been fired, damaging a vehicle, but said nobody was injured.

Mike Dionne told CHEK News that a friend of his had gone over to intervene after hearing a loud argument at a neighbour’s house.

That led to his friend being struck in the face, Dionne said. When another friend went to see what was happening, shots were fired from what appeared to be a rifle, he said.

The suspect was gone by the time police arrived.

Const. Monika Terragni, the media relations officer for Comox Valley RCMP, called the incident a serious event, especially for a small community like Courtenay.

“We consider ourselves still to be a small and safe town,” she said. “The police take that very seriously and we do put all our resources forward to investigate the matter.”

Terragni said police are still gathering evidence and the investigation is in its early stages.

However, police said all parties are familiar with one another and the shooting is not believed to be a random incident.
