Command of Canada’s Naval Reserve passed Friday to Commodore Michael Hopper, a career educator who first joined the reserves in 1986 as a cook.

Hopper has commanded HMCS Carleton, Canada’s naval reserve division in Ottawa, and HMCS Summerside, a Kingston-class patrol vessel.

Command passed from Commodore Marta Mulkins in a ceremony at CFB Esquimalt with Rear Admiral Bob Auchterlonie, commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, presiding.

The Canadian Naval Reserve trains people and teams to augment regular members of the Canadian Armed Forces as they undertake their missions. Reserve divisions across Canada number 24 units, each of 150 to 200 people.
