Coast guard and navy respond to boaters in distress off Ten Mile Point at an area known as Evans Rock.

Coast guard vessels and aircraft responded to a sailboat in distress off Ten Mile Point in Saanich on Wednesday evening.

The small sailboat had one man aboard. The vessel went aground when the skipper turned too sharply while entering Cadboro Bay.

Witnesses on shore saw flares and heard whistles coming from an area known as Evans Rock.

A mayday call was issued on the boater’s behalf, said a spokesman at the Victoria Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

A Buffalo aircraft and Cormorant helicopter were dispached from CFB Comox. Vessels from the Royal Canadian Navy also responded.

Another boater got the man, who was uninjured, off the rocks. The sailboat was towed by Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue to Oak Bay Marina.
