The City of Victoria is inviting artists to apply for its first artist-in-residence program.

Artists who are selected will work with city staff to create artworks over a one-year term. Applicants must be professional artists or artist teams living in the capital region, including the Gulf Islands.

The selected artist or team will create public art to enhance projects such as playgrounds or street and sidewalk upgrades.

The artist in residence will work as an independent contractor for a one year starting in October, working 20 hours a week for a total of $42,000. During that time, at least one artwork must be completed.

Money for the program is coming from the city’s Art in Public Places Reserve Fund.

Interested candidates are invited to attend an information session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Victoria City Hall.

Deadline for submissions is Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
