The City of Nanaimo issued a statement Friday saying that the mayor and council had received enquiries about key members of city staff.

Privacy laws prohibit the city from commenting on personnel matters, the statement said.

“We can advise that mayor and council have learned about an allegation of significant concern. We have requested a thorough and independent investigation which will be undertaken immediately to help the city move toward effective resolution,” it said.

The city will provide updates within legal and privacy constraints, it said.

“We take these concerns very seriously and share Nanaimo residents’ commitment to prudent and thoughtful governance and processes. Council is therefore committed to addressing and resolving these matters in the public interest,” said the statement.
