The groundbreaking ceremony for a planned Centre for Jewish Life and Learning at 2955 Glasgow St. will be held Sunday afternoon.

The centre “will mark the opening of a new chapter in Jewish life on Vancouver Island,” according to statement from Chabad of Vancouver Island.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, NDP MPs Murray Rankin and Randall Garrison and NDP MLA Gary Holman are to be among the dignitaries at the ceremony.

The centre is to become a hub for religious, educational and social services for Vancouver Island’s growing Jewish population, the statement said.

The facility will include a daycare centre.

The ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the property next to Topaz Park’s sprawling playing fields and playground.

Chabad-Lubavitch is a philosophy, movement and organization dedicated to the welfare of Jewish people.
