A car is removed after crashing into the Quadra Appliances building at the corner of Quadra Street and Tattersall Drive.

When David Chiu was almost shaken out of the washroom Monday afternoon, he knew right away what had happened.

“It was no surprise,” said Chiu, owner of Quadra Appliances, looking at the crumpled car embedded in the wall of the building at the corner of Quadra Street and Tattersall Drive.

It is the third time the building has been hit in the last three years and, after the previous crashes, it was rebuilt.

This time, the building, with damage to one corner, appeared to have won the battle with a grey Ford Fusion and red Mini Cooper, both of which were heavily damaged.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries and a passer-by, who was hit in the leg by a piece of metal was not injured, said Saanich police Const. Janis Carmena. “It could have been much more disastrous,” she said.

The crash closed the intersection for about 45 minutes.

The Mini Cooper was waiting to turn left onto Tattersall and the Ford was heading straight down Quadra when they collided.

“Both went through the yellow lights,” Carmena said.

The Mini driver was handed a ticket for failing to yield and the Ford driver was ticketed for failing to stop at a yellow light.

Chiu, who has seen regular crashes at the intersection during the 18 years he has run his business there, believes they are all caused by impatient drivers.

“They need to watch the signal and be polite,” he said as pieces of tangled metal and twisted wheels were pulled from the side of the building.

Nearby resident Tanya Robbins said drivers speed through the area.

“They need cameras,” she said.
