North Saanich RCMP believe alcohol was involved in a crash where a car hit a hydrant and filled with water Monday evening.

Police were called to the scene on John Road at around 5:30 p.m., just after a woman reported a hit and run nearby.

“A woman showed up at the detachment saying her vehicle had been struck by another vehicle, with minimal damage,” Cpl. Clover Johns said.

Police were looking for the vehicle when they received a call reporting a single-vehicle collision between the Patricia Bay Highway and Wilson Road.

“It was actually spinning out of control before it struck the hydrant,” she said.

The driver, a man in his late 60s, was trapped in the green Nissan Sentra. A torrent of water filled the car up to his chest.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the car’s roof and extract the driver.

“He is going to the hospital for a medical assessment. We’ll continue our investigation,” Johns said.
