A Victoria man who apparently left a burning cigarette butt in a shirt hanging on his bathroom door received minor injuries in a resulting apartment fire that could have been much worse.

The Victoria Fire Department was called to the View Towers apartments at 1147 Quadra Street at 8:45 p.m. Friday. Residents reported smoke in the building but did not know the source.

Eventually, fire crews located the fire in an 11th floor suite. The lone resident was passed out on his bed, with a fire in his bathroom.

Firefighters found a burning shirt hanging on the bathroom door. They tossed it into the bathtub and doused out the fire with water. A cigarette butt was found in the remains.

The resident received minor smoke inhalation injuries and was taken to hospital.

There was an estimated $1,000 worth of damage to the apartment, with heat burns to the bathroom door and floor.
