A squirrel that made a mad dash across two lanes of highway traffic during the morning commute caused a four-car pile-up in Nanaimo on Friday.

The squirrel survived and no one was injured, but several vehicles were heavily damaged.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday, when a 53-year-old Nanaimo man heading northbound on the Island Highway near Superior Road saw a squirrel dart into his path and hit the brakes, said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.

That caused a chain-reaction crash involving his pickup and the three vehicles behind him.

Braking on highways where speeds can be up to 110 kilometres an hour is dangerous and may cause serious collisions, police warn.
