Bomb scare on Coastal Renaissance a false alarm; two Sunday sailings cancelled

Staff of the Coastal Renaissance reported the suspicious package just before the boat docked at Tsawwassen about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. This is a file shot of the vessel.

Reports of a possible bomb threat on board a B.C. Ferries vessel Sunday afternoon turned out to be a false alarm.

An RCMP bomb squad investigated a suspicious package found by staff of the Coastal Renaissance just before the boat docked at the Tsawwassen terminal about 2:30 p.m., according to B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.

Ferries officials contacted Delta police, who then called in the Mounties’ bomb squad. Just before 5 p.m., officials determined it was a false alarm.

The 3 p.m. sailing scheduled for Swartz Bay was cancelled as was the ferry’s 5 p.m. sailing returning to Tsawwassen.

After a thorough search of the vessel, the regularly scheduled 7 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay took place.
