A 33-year-old Duncan man is dead after being pulled from Cowichan Lake west of Youbou.

Lake Cowichan RCMP were called just after 9 a.m. Wednesday by someone who had noticed vehicle tracks going from a logging road into the lake. Officers attended the scene, about 17 kilometres west of Youbou along the logging road, and saw the tracks heading over an embankment.

The Youbou Volunteer Fire Department assisted with an emergency boat and underwater camera, and helped to locate a blue Toyota van and a nearby body.

The RCMP recovery team was called in to recover the body and tow the van to the Heather Campground boat launch.

An RCMP traffic analyst was still analyzing evidence Friday.

Lake Cowichan RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Lita Watson said there was a co-operative effort involved.

“These investigations and recoveries can be dangerous and it’s appreciated to have specialized teams and trained volunteers who are willing to assist at a moment’s notice.”

Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of a blue Toyota van on Tuesday or Wednesday in the area to come forward.
