The ferry Quinitsa, built in 1977, serves the Buckley Bay-Denman Island route. It will become a relief vessel in the B.C. Ferries fleet.

Two lucky boaters were rescued by a B.C. Ferries crew off Denman Island on Sunday as passengers watched, said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.

Around 3:30 p.m., the captain of MV Quinitsa was alerted to a sinking nearby vessel and two people in the water by the ferries security centre.

The ferry departed early from the Hornby Island terminal to help the distressed boaters, who were about halfway along the route to Denman Island.

A rescue boat was launched from the ferry and a man and a woman were lifted out of the frigid water unharmed. Their 16-foot Glasscraft fiberglass boat was sinking, with only a quarter of the boat above water. A local resident helped tow it to shore.

The two boaters were brought aboard the ferry and warmed up with blankets and hot drinks, Marshall said.

“We’re very proud of our crew in this situation.”
