A young freighter crewman from Greece was airlifted to Comox and taken to hospital after suffering a medical emergency at sea on Friday.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Victoria was called Friday evening and asked to airlift a crewman on a bulk freighter off the coast of Sandspit in Haida Gwaii.

“He was suffering from a medical condition that required care at a hospital,” said Capt. Trevor Reid, from the Royal Canadian Airforce Base at 19 Wing Comox.

“I don’t know how he is now, but when he was transferred to B.C. Ambulance … he was stable.”

Reid said the man is in his 20s, but could not say whether he was injured or ill due to privacy concerns.

Royal Canadian Air Force crews on a Buffalo airplane and Cormorant helicopter flew through mist and strong wind to reach the freighter.

The aircraft cover 920,000 square kilometres of mountainous terrain in British Columbia and the Yukon, extending 965 kilometres offshore into the Pacific Ocean.
