Kal Penn is coming to town to star in The Girl in the Photographs, a horror feature that began shooting here this week.
The actor best known for his role as Kumar Patel in the Harold & Kumar film comedies and as Dr. Lawrence Kutner on House will play a celebrity photographer from South Dakota, producer Andrea Chung confirmed Thursday.
Penn, who currently plays Det. Fontanelle White in the CBS series Battle Creek, has also worked as U.S. President Barack Obama’s associate director of public engagement in the White House.
He is host of Discovery Channel’s The Big Brain Theory, an engineering competition show.
In The Girl in the Photographs, his character crosses paths with a small-town girl recovering from an abusive relationship whose photo mysteriously appears at the scene of crimes committed by a pair of serial killers.
The film, executive-produced by veteran horror filmmaker Wes Craven, also features Kenny Wormald, who is no stranger to Victoria. The Boston-born actor, who played a small-town dance crusader in Footloose, was here in the summer of 2012 to play a pot smuggler in writer-director John Stockwell’s Kid Cannabis.
Craven protégé Nick Simon is directing The Girl in the Photographs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oz Perkins and Robert Morast. The director of photography is Dean Cundey, whose long list of credits includes shooting the Back to the Future movies and the original Halloween trilogy.
The film, inspired by the Scream franchise and set in the fashion world, is being produced by Al-Ghanim Entertainment as part of a planned slate of action and horror films.
