A 13-year-old Langford boy hit by a pickup truck on Sooke Road earlier this week has died, West Shore RCMP said Friday.
AJ (Adam Jessie) Wakeling died at Victoria General Hospital Thursday evening, police said.
The boy was crossing between Glenshire Road and the Slegg Lumber parking lot entrance at about 7 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a small pickup in the eastbound lane.
The collision occurred at the crest of a hill and around a sweeping curve just east of Glenshire Drive, according to West Shore RCMP Sgt. Max Fos-sum.
The road was dry, but lighting was minimal, with just one street lamp on the westbound side, according to police.
AJ's twin, who was with his brother but did not cross, witnessed the accident. Another sibling arrived on the scene as police investigated Tuesday night, police said.
On Friday, the Grade 9 Cedar Hill Middle School student was described as funny, nice, kind and outgoing.
"There are no words to adequately express the loss of a child," Cedar Hill principal Tom Aerts said in a letter to parents Friday. "I know that many thoughts and prayers are with AJ and his family at this time."
Family friend Connie Kaziechko said the family - mother Yannick Aubin and AJ's older brothers Sean and Brandon - remain in shock. The family has asked the media for privacy.
The four boys live with their mother.
The family had just moved into a new rental house in Langford, Kaziechko said.
"They are surrounded by lots of friends," she said.
"The boys are trying to stay distracted."
AJ and his mother had a very close relationship, Kaziechko said.
"He had his mom wrapped around his finger. He had a real twinkle in his eye. He was a real charmer," Kaziechko said.
"It was really nice to see such a great relationship between a boy of that age and his mom."
West Shore RCMP said no criminal charges are being considered against the driver, noting that it was dark, the teen's clothing was dark, and the driver was travelling at the average speed of the road.
Alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the incident, police said.
The B.C. Coroners Service is expected to conduct a detailed investigation.
