Hydro Quebec restores power to most customers who lost electricity after storm

The Canadian Press / Times Colonist
December 25, 2012

MONTREAL - Hydro Quebec says it has restored power to 90 per cent of its customers who lost electricity after a powerful storm last week.

The lights went out for about 110,000 customers in the Laurentians, the Lanaudiere region north of Montreal and the Outaouais region of western Quebec when a storm dumped about 50 centimetres of snow in some areas on Friday.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Hydro Quebec said about 4,500 customers were still without power and the utility said it hoped to restore electricity to all customers by Wednesday.

Since many clients live in remote or isolated areas, Hydro Quebec says some of its workers had to put on snowshoes or borrow snowmobiles to reach certain areas.

Spokeswoman Isabelle Nuckle says the weight of the snow caused several trees to sag onto power lines.

He says the work took longer than expected because many utility poles need to be replaced.
