Owner of trailer suffers minor burns while trying to save dog

A trailer home was destroyed and a home was damaged in separate fires on the Saanich peninsula Sunday.

Saanich firefighters rushed to a home in the 3100-block of Wascana Street around 11:35 a.m. Sunday.

Flames were pouring out the living-room window and 17 firefighters tackled the blaze from the outside.

The fire was contained to the living-room area, said battalion Chief Russ Ricketts. One person suffered smoke inhalation but no one was seriously injured, he said.

Firefighters also rescued the family dog, which was hiding under the bed in the master bedroom.

The damage is estimated at $100,000 and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In Saanichton around 2 a.m. Sunday, a fire broke out in the trailer parked at Popeye’s Campground.

Area resident James Younger says he heard a knock on his door in the early-morning hours from a neighbour alerting him to the fire.

They reached the small campground at 7591 Jimmy Rd. to find Central Saanich firefighters battling flames that engulfed the trailer and a neighbouring bus.

“The trailer and bus were burned up good,” Younger said, adding that the owner, a permanent resident of the park, occasionally had campfires. He did not know what caused the fire.

The trailer's owner suffered minor burns when he tried to enter his burning home to find his dog, which had escaped and was walking around the scene when Younger arrived.
