Grisly scene in Windsor, Ont., after more than 140 dead cats found in apartments

The Canadian Press / Times Colonist
December 14, 2012

WINDSOR, Ont. - Police and animal welfare officials are investigating after more than 140 dead cats were found in two downtown apartments in Windsor, Ont.

Sgt. Matt D'Asti says 124 dead cats were found in a freezer and refrigerator in one apartment, along with 50 other cats that were alive.

He says the apartment was filthy and covered in feces and urine.

The investigation led to a second apartment where 20 more dead cats were found in a refrigerator or freezer.

Two residents from the apartments have been taken to hospital to be assessed but D'Asti says there's no indication that the cats were abused.

Police were called to the scene today by the local humane society, but there had been no previous animal complaints from the building.

D'Asti says police will be looking at how the situation became so bad.

"When we caught wind of this today, our officers attended and the question on everyone's mind is how is it possible for people to have 50 cats without us being aware of it."
