An escaped inmate, who police say has a violent history, was found Friday night near the Nanaimo prison he escaped from just 10 hours earlier.
Donald Sweezey, 53, was found hiding on a farm next door to the Nanaimo Correctional Centre late Friday night.
He had walked away from a roadside maintenance crew at Biggs Road earlier that day.
A spokeswoman for the Nanaimo RCMP said officers were worried about Sweezey because of his "extremely violent" criminal record.
They would not provide any details about his crimes.
"We were definitely concerned because of the serious offences and violent criminal history," said Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong. "It was good that he was located quickly."
Police canine units were called in to search the area.
Officers were also busy responding to tips from the public.
"The public was seeing him, or at least people who they thought looked like him," Armstrong said.
