A cyclist involved in a collision with a car on the Pat Bay Highway near McKenzie Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Thursday wasn’t as badly hurt as first thought.

The 24-year-old woman was released from hospital later in the morning after being treated for soft-tissue bruising and minor scrapes. Saanich police said the woman was very lucky that her injuries weren’t more serious.

Police said it appears that the cyclist was trying to cross both of the highway’s southbound lanes to get to the grass median when she was hit by the car. The 24-year-old driver told police did not see the bicycle until he hit it.

He was shaken up but otherwise unhurt.

The southbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted at Glanford Avenue and McKenzie until about 9:30 a.m. The closure created significant congestion.

Charges are so far not being contemplated, police said.
